PLEATS: Interior Scenes with Soft and Affective Robots

PLEATS:  Interior Scenes with Soft and Affective Robots is the solo exhibition of Eun Young Park. Since the ‘Radical Soft Robots’ project was initiated in 2019, the artist has explored the potential of soft robots as a critical medium and experimented with varied materials and techniques resulting in numerous prototypes. She found it interesting how cutting-edge research in soft robotics draws inspiration from traditional craft and design techniques such as origami and fabric manipulation and was fascinated by the forms, transformation and movement folding and pleating can make. This exhibition shows her experimentation on soft robots made with these techniques with varied themes of structure, light, memory, texture, etc. By this, she poses questions on what the robot will be like in the future home, the blurred borders between craft and technology, and furthermore materiality and gender of technology.

주름: Interior Scenes with Soft and Affective Robots

이 전시는 주름에 관한 것이다. 여기서 주름은 작업의 출발점이자 주제어라기보다는, 작가가 3년 전 시작한 이 작업이 때로 확장되고 방향 전환하며 만든 일종의 작업의 텍스처다. 소프트 로봇Soft Robot이라는 말이 주는 묘한 대비 — 로봇이 부드럽다니? — 로 촉발된 이 프로젝트는, 60년대 급진적 인플레이터블 작업에 영감을 받아 비평적 매채로서의 소프트로봇의 가능성을 탐구하는 것으로 시작해, 점차 정서적이고 부드러운 기술 일반에 대한 관심으로 확장되었다.  특히 작가는 소프트로보틱스라는 첨단 분야에서 종이 접기나 주름 접기같은 공예와 디자인의 테크닉이 적극적으로 쓰이는 것에 흥미를 느끼고, 주름이 만드는 구조, 운동, 질감, 빛, 그리고 기억에 대해 탐구한다. 그러나 이 전시는 하나의 주제어를 향한 완성된 오브제만을 선보이기보다는, 작가의 공부의 과정, 프로토타입들, 생각의 전환과 우회를 노출하며, 로봇의 정의, 환경으로서의 로봇, 기술의 물성, 기술과 공예 사이의 관계에 대한 열린 질문을 관객에게 던진다.
